'Until The Sun Forgets To Rise' by Sarah Asermily - Author 🌅
So, what would you do if your soul mate of a decade, is finding it hard to accept the 'love of your life' when they are both of equal importance to you? And, how do you salvage a relationship, when years in, you discover that you neglected to discuss an issue that could be, and probably is, a deal breaker?
Having met Catherine, when the young girl and newcomer to her school, had chosen her out of an entire classroom of kids, to be her best friend, Emma at the time considering this the highest accolade as she doesn't make friends easily, is smitten with her new found shadow. There follows a decade of kinship. Their bond was unbreakable, until they inevitably met potential partners. Whilst Emma takes to Catherine's new beau, her best friend fails to show the same enthusiasm for Theodore, his initial reticence really not helping matters. After an uncertain start, all seems to be progressing nicely for Theodore and Emma, so how could they have omitted to consider the one thing that may threaten their future, just as it all seems to be falling into place?
I had been anticipating this novel for some months, so when I saw that it was available, I couldn't wait to download it. The writing is in the first person narrative which is personally something that I enjoy as it gives the reader an immediate connection with the primary character. It was also formatted in quite a large number of chapters, however, each chapter is fairly short. This helps keep the concentration alive.
This story absolutely took me through every emotion imaginable, highs at how great everything was progressing for our female protaganist and her handsome history student (sometimes to the point of it being a little nauseating, lol), and then crushing lows, shattering her idyllic life. In fact, so passionately did I feel about the direction that her life was taking, that I found myself feeling disappointed & troubled at Emma's actions when she finds herself cruelly catapulted back into her old life. It left me reflecting on how much of a challenge it can be, when two people who have come from such different backgrounds and have decided to make a future together, fail to communicate about what matters most to them, particularly when one of them won't.
The dynamic between Emma and her parents and the sisterly bond with Catherine, made me question why Emma had found it so difficult to find friends and enjoy the company of others. I think though, it might be one of the perils of growing up as an only child, not ever being given the chance to develop social skills effectively. Catherine is a much more outgoing gregarious child and wants to make Emma her 'second self' as much as Emma is happy to fit that mold as she feels that she is lacking her own identity.
After reading the Prologue, I was desperate to know what happened next, I read it in one and a half days whenever I could and found it incredibly hard to put down. The twist at the end initially threw me off course for a few minutes, not understanding what was happening, and then the Author gives you a flash back that makes the conclusion of this intriguing, heartwarming read completely heart-breaking, making such an impact that I think it will stay with me for sometime. I loved it and shall be purchasing the paperback as it is one that I will be wanting to re-read. I look forward to seeing what else Sarah writes.
